Getting Started With Bullet Journaling

Journaling is a great way to capture your thoughts and ideas and put them on paper. While some people like to journal about their day, I like to use bullet journaling as a form of planning my days! Until now, if I have any deadline or an event/ webinar, I jot them down on my planner. However, my planner only has entries until June 2020. I figured out I can get started with bullet journaling from the month of July. What better way to get started with bullet journaling than now! I have always been wanting to start a bullet journal. As someone who is new to bullet journaling, I will guide you with some tips and resources that I have found helpful while starting out!

GENERAL TIPS

  • Use your bullet journal the way you want (whether it be for journaling or planning, collage or scrapbooking). Use it as a form of expression. Whenever you have an idea, thought that you would like to be recorded, use your bullet journal. Customize and decorate it as creatively you want to!

  • I have found hand-lettering to be very effective in making my planner look pretty! I started out by downloading some pre-drawn outlines and practiced on them. Play around with the thickness, structure, and layout of the letters and you can easily make a creative design out of it.

  • Add pictures to your bullet journal. Add any token (like a football ticket, concert ticket, event pass) that will remind you of those memories. Immortalize those memories in the form of pictures.

  • Add color and lots of color. You want the bullet journal to reflect your personality. I prefer the pastel color palette but you can go crazy with it.

  • If you’re planning to use your bullet journal as a planner, make sure to make the spreads beforehand to save time. If you want, you can leave some pages if you think of any new spreads to add in between the months.

  • Add habit trackers, mood trackers, goals tracker (and all different kinds of trackers). I have seen these kinds of trackers help me be accountable for certain tasks I want to accomplish. I highly recommend making these spreads since you can look back on your days later on!

SUPPLIES

Leuchtturm1917 Medium A5 Dotted Hardcover Notebook

After a lot of research on which journals are good, I found Leuchtturm 1917. (recommended by AmandaRach Lee of course!) It has a dotted structure and it is perfect for bullet journaling. Alternatives can just be a plain journal (lined or unlined). Other brands for bullet journals are Moleskine and Archer & Olive.

Zebra Pen Mildliner

I recently bought these and they are wonderful. They have dual tips - can be used as a highlighter and pen! Use this to draw objects (flowers, stars) or color in for calligraphy.

Tombow Pen Dual Brush Markers

These are the perfect brush pens for hand-lettering. You just have to get used to the grip and you can make perfect calligraphy fonts.

Crayola Washable Super Tips Marker

You can use this or Zebra. These are as good as Zebra Midliners but they are just markers (not highlighters).

Washi Tape

Use Washi Tape to decorate your bullet journal. They have cute designs that can be used as borders or stick pictures in your journal.

Of course, these are just recommendations. You do not have to buy all of these. For example, Crayola Markers are an alternative to Zebra Midliners and Sakura Pigma is an alternative to Tombow black brush pens. You can experiment with them and see which one you like.

I hope the resources, supplies, and tips can help you get started with bullet journaling. As I said before, journaling is a great way to channel your thoughts and put them on paper. Happy Journaling! Let us know how it goes!

Love,

Kuhu
